Marra Camp is Northumberland’s Big Adventure Camp. It’s open to all sections of Scouting and Guiding from groups in Northumberland and across the UK. Every two years on the last May bank holiday weekend Marra Camp takes place each time with a distinct theme.
The event is still based on the old Caud Marra camps, which were winter activities camps held in February all about fun, adventure and meeting new friends.
You might wonder what Caud Marra means? It basically stood for Cold and Utterly Daft Friends, Marra being geordie slang for friend. Since the first event Northumberland County developed the Marra theme into lots of winter camps which were held at Gosforth Park Scout Camp. Sadly when Gosforth Park Scout Camp closed, Marra Camps ended for a period of time before being restarted in 2005 at new location of Hawkhirst Scout Camp.
In 2008 there was a change from the normal Winter camp at Hawkhirst to celebrate 100 years of Scouting in Northumberland. This camp was called Lookwide Marra and was held as per the original Marra camps in Gosforth Park attracting over 1000 young people. This set a new format for the event.
This was followed by an even bigger camp in 2010 named Medieval Marra which saw 1400 participants head to Beanley in Northumberland for a old fashioned Medieval themed camp.
2012 came round, and we couldnt do anything but celebrate the London 2012 Olympic Games. Marralympics was born and again held at Beanley with a range of sporting and adventurous activities on offer.
Marra was then on the move again in 2014 as Circus Marra took place at Causey Park Farm in Morpeth. Youngsters joined in all of the fun of the fair with four days of adventure, challenge and fun packed full of activities and shows in our Big Top!
Marra Camp then re-occurred in 2016 at Causey Creek Ranch for Wild West Marra! Across the weekend we had 1792 young people taking part in amazing adventure, fun and challenge! They were backed up and supported by a huge 616 volunteers making a total of 2407 people taking part our event!
The last Marra Camp occured in 2018 for Pirate Marra! Over the weekend we saw 1800 young people join the adventure along with 700 dedicated volunteers! This is 2500 amount of people in total! Amazing!
What will Marra 2020 bring?
